Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai
“AntiMagic Academy 35th Test Platoon”
[Action, Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem, Military, Romance, Supernatural]
Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai, more like Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shitai AMIRIGHT HAHAHA
“The Antimagic Academy is a special school that specializes in educating future witch hunters whose primary job is to find and stop magical threats and dangers. They are also called Inquisitors, whose aim is to stop and confiscate, not kill or destroy. The Academy is divided into several squads, but the most infamous one is the 35th Test Platoon, also nicknamed the “Small Fry Platoon” due to its low ranking among the other squads and its incompetent members.
However, the ever so boring atmosphere of this unlucky squad gets spiced up when their little club gets powered up with a new member named Ouka Ootori, a former Inquisitor and an excellent fighter. What they do not know is that she was removed from her position because of her tendency to break the rules and an incident where she killed a witch. The club is run by a clumsy captain Takeru Kusanagi who is unable to use anything except his sword, so Ouka’s views clash immediately with the views of other members of the squad. Can they cooperate with someone who hates witches so much and will they be able to learn from each other’s mistakes and tragic pasts?” – MyAnimeList
Plot/Storyline – 2/10
As you can probably tell from reading the synopsis, there’s not a single slice of originality in this entire “plot.” If anything, it would have to be the fact that it’s an “anti-magic” academy setting rather than a school teaching magic. This isn’t the first like that either though….
don’t try not to give out spoilers, I’ll just say, the story IS ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE. It’s like a new main story/enemy/etc. every other episode, and honestly it’s so incoherent it’s terrible. To be honest, I don’t know what the main point of the story was at all. Now, when it comes to harem anime, that’s not new. However, this show takes the cake for completely unfollowable story that makes no sense.
There’s all your favorite clichés, the “falls and grabs boob accidentally,” “Just to be clear, I’m not doing this for you tsundere routine,” and of course, let us not forget, OP protag who has a melodramatic scene with every main heroine in the first 3 episodes.
That’s not even the worst of it though, remember me mentioning the incoherence? OF COURSE YOU DO I JUST WROTE IT, but that doesn’t stop this show from giving you flashbacks from the SAME DAMN EPISODE, as if I’m so senile I forgot what happened 5 minutes ago. Actually though, the worst part is simply that there’s about 5 lines in-between each “scene,” meaning that the story is full of perfect chance encounters wherever the protag goes. One scene they’re talking at one of the heroine’s parent’s grave (sooo dramatic ResidentSleeper), the next fucking second, there’s King Arthur, resurrected by a necromancer, and of course, in some kind of fucking mecha powersuit with a railgun (or is he the powersuit? hard to say, not like they touch on it at all. Also no, I’m not making this up, actually happens; I don’t consider this a spoiler, too bad). To be continued in the character section.
ALSO FUCKING MECHS, WHY?!?! Why do you need 3D mechs in an anime about magic. NO. BAD. It’d be fine if it had something to do with the story as some other animes do (I know mech+magic isn’t that uncommon okay, don’t treat me like a pleb), but there’s simply NO REASON WHATSOEVER to make this dumbass powersuits, and fucking robotic mechs. NO. NO. NO. 0/10 for mechs
What are those things behind him? Floating pillars of heaven? Why? Who knows?
Characters/Personalities – 2/8
Oh and here we are in the character section. To make this review flow better (unlike the show) I’ll continue straight off my last point. The character “development” is frankly so bad, I was actually choking on air as I watched it. I’ll take Ouka Ootori as an example (the ex-inquisitor who joins the group), she thinks the squad is a obstacle in one episode, then the next fucking line she has, there’s tears of understanding in her eyes, like WTH is this. She goes from being like “yeah fuck off m8” to “I love everyone in this squad” in less than 20 minutes of show time. IT’S SO BAD. Now not all of the chars are like this, but there are some EXTREME discontinuity problems like I said before. They try to give them all some kind of dramatic back story or conflict, which are not only all cliché, but despite being pretty damn severe in one respect or another, are resolved cleanly in very short time periods using whatever plot holes are available. This is of course done with absolutely NO REGARD for how much sense they make.
Some shows deserve an analysis of each character, this show is not one of them. I don’t think there’s much else to say other than the characters are all generic, with perhaps a tiny bit of spice that is, nonetheless, a far cry from original in any sense of the word.
Art/Animations – 2/6
The art eh? Well it’s about as special as any other half-rate harem anime, meaning it’s pretty damn bad. I personally don’t care as much about art as long as it doesn’t look like it’s from the 90’s. If it’s something special like steins;gate or one of the monogatari series, that’d be a different story. Not much else to say here, the art is bland and generic.
Animation, oohh boy, well once again nothing special at all. Below average I’d say, there’s really not much to say about this other than the 3D scenes. Yes, the 3D scenes that nobody has ever wanted or asked for in literally any anime. The 3D scenes are the worst I’ve seen in any show, the things that are 3D look rubbery, and the actions they take/do look wrong in a sense of physics. It’s low quality all around.
Music/SFX – 2/6
Snore, 2/10. Nothing to say at all about it. I don’t even remember the music so hopefully that says something to you. It gets 2 points for not being so terrible that I actually remember it for being terrible.
Memorability/Emotion/Purpose – 0/6
What anime am I reviewing again? Emotion? Oh you mean that melodramatic crap that happens when the characters have absolutely no reason to be so invested? 0/10. Purpose?… was there one? I feel like shit after watching it, does that count?
Appropriate Proportions – 1/4
I don’t even know man. If you were to take the time in battle scenes, comedy scenes, etc, etc and combine them, I guess it would weigh out okay. maybe.. It gets 1 point for that. -3 for the fact that each “scene” seems unrelated to the last, making the proportions so difficult to mentally picture that I can’t even evaluate this section properly.
Appropriate Proportions: 1/4
Overall Score: 9/40 (AKA VERY BAD, the worst rating I deliver)
Shit-taste overall score: 3/10
This score is for people that watch animes as fans of the genera, and are not as interested in comparing it with shows from other genera. Therefore I give a separate out of 10 score, for those curious how good I think it does within it’s main genera type(s).
That’s all for this show. THANK GOD. Fate/Zero coming up next.
